For imposing the Emergency

.The goings-on in India for the past three years — China acrylic for scourer Factory the mocked promise of creating jobs, the shrinking economy, the disastrous economic consequences of demonetisation that have now begun to take their social toll in the shape of farmers’ suicides, the police firing on farmers and suppression of farmers’ movements in BJP-ruled states, the rebellious mood of dalit youth, the dispatch of the CBI to silence political adversaries, and the fear engendered in the media through selective targeting, paint a picture that is not consistent with any ideal of democracy.

It was a clutch of top BJP figures who held top positions in the Atal Behari Vajpayee government who pointed to the "authoritarian" direction the government was taking, and alerted us to the possibility of a new Emergency.Although Mrs Gandhi was enough of a democrat herself to lift the Emergency after 19 months and call fresh elections to start on a fresh slate, the electorate taught her party a stinging lesson and installed the Janata Party, a combine of several Opposition parties of which the Jan Sangh, the BJP’s precursor, was a part, in power. Ironically, they didn’t take the lead in pointing to the government’s blemishes.Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not let Emergency remain in a forgotten corner of history to which it had been consigned by successive generations. The Opposition now speaks of "an undeclared Emergency" in the country. As citizens, we need to be mindful of the balance of possibilities. But the Janata Party’s misrule, the rising graph of attacks on the poor and dalits, and the constant bickering among the ruling party’s constituents as the RSS-driven Jan Sangh began to flex its muscles and push itself to the front in the in-house battle for power, led to the collapse of the Janata government and Indira’s rousing return to the centrestage in the election of 1980 that was forced on the country.

For imposing the Emergency, during which leading Opposition figures were jailed, the media gagged, and sections of the ruling elite — the Emergency czars — trampled on public concerns with a rare disregard, the Congress Party paid a heavy price. The Emergency declared by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on the midnight of June 25, 1975 was a signal disservice to the basic idea of democracy, but it is far from certain if those who try to bring back its memories have taken appropriate lessons from it. After  assuming office three years ago, he has fished it out every June 26 in order to present the narrative that the Congress, the BJP’s principal rival on an all-India basis, is the big bad wolf while the BJP government that he leads represents emancipation, liberty and the very culture of democracy.

It needs to be humorous

Sometimes, we don’t even give them a passing thought. This is exactly the picture Cyrus wants to paint through his comics. Because at the end of the day, it is all important — all of it is going to be adding something to the cause. Through his comic series Trees of Aarey, he aims to ignite a conversation around the issue of the felling of thousands of trees in Aarey Colony."Cyrus says he has always cared about the environment, but isn’t entirely sure if he was actively involved in trying to make a change. So, I figured it would be interesting to have to trees speak directly to the readers — like they are addressing the reader personally," he says. "I have always been in support of the environment, but I have supported it in spirit; mostly signing online petitions, sharing one or two articles on my social media pages, but apart from that, not much. "I remember thinking I wanted to do more than just share stuff online.

It needs to be humorous but should also strike a chord with the reader."Today, if nothing else, he hopes to start a conversation around the issue. Trees of Aarey provides the perspective of the trees with the trees talking in first person. That’s my only objective," he says.. But when he is not churning out copies for the firm, he picks up his pen to draw comics. "I know just a couple of comics or a series can’t China Dust control resin Factory make much of a change, but I’m sure that the mesغير مجاز مي باشدe will go out there — that more and more people will take up the cause. "We always think of trees as nothing more than passive objects. "I wouldn’t want to discount anyone who shares even a small status. "For me, the content is the most important part of Trees of Aarey. That Mumbai is quickly losing its green patches is public knowledge. While he has forayed into comics only in the last few years, Cyrus has zeroed in on a serious issue to draw about. The third phase of the Metro project, which will run from Colaba to Seepz will lead to the cutting down on more than 5,000 trees — a number of which largely fall in Aarey Colony, the green lungs of Mumbai. For Cyrus, the process of creating a comic is instinctive. And I created the comics. On most days, Cyrus Daruwala works as a copywriter in an advertising firm.

From national highway constructions to real estate projects, large-scale deforestation will be a by-product. With this, the illustrator doesn’t just want to bring Aarey into the forefront; he also wants to create awareness about how we treat our environment. "The first step is to conceptualise the idea and figure out what the mesغير مجاز مي باشدe should be," he says, further elaborating that drawing the comic out on paper is the last step."However, he clarifies that he doesn’t want to say that sharing awareness online is futile." He recalls how the idea to create comics surrounding the issue emerged from his social media activities. It isn’t just this one development project that could lead to mass deforestation and green life destruction.

Experts are also being supported to pursue

We are part of the Inter-Agency Space Debris Coordination Committee (IADC), an China acrylic resin manufacturers international governmental forum that coordinates global efforts to reduce debris by sharing research and identifying debris mitigation options," says Dr K. It is better to be safe, and avoid the addition of more junk," Dr Sivan explains. Nasa was the first space agency to issue guidelines for orbital debris mitigation in 1995. "Everybody wants to clear outer space of debris, but how to do it is a billion-dollar question.Perhaps, all these radars could help track and cart away the trash by 2050!. Sivan, director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvanan-thapuram. In the post-Cold War era, these radars are sharing data on space debris with all space-faring nations.Space scientists have been moving satellites, including the International Space Station (ISS) a couple of km every time they spot junk (fragments of defunct satellites, rocket parts or remains of an anti-satellite weapon test carried out by China in 2007, solar cells or components the size of a salt-sized grain), hurtling at seven km a second, as a collision could damage critical components, incapacitate spacecraft or produce more fragments.

It’s a small step in addressing a mammoth problem, but it is part of the international effort to mitigate this global problem. It’s the David versus Goliath narrative in outer space, albeit with a twist in the tale, as Goliaths duck Davids, because even a fleck of paint packs the same lethal punch as a 550-pound object travelling at almost 120 km per hour. The number of satellites launched since Sputnik in 1957 has spiralled to 1470. A rough estimate of such debris: 5,500 tonnes of over 170 million pieces, some smaller than one centimetre. The US set up the North American Aerospace Defence Command, with its headquarters at Peterson Air Force Base near Colorado Springs, Colorado, along with Canada. The US Vanguard 1 satellite, launched in 1958, is the oldest artificial satellite still circling the Earth, despite its low orbit."Earlier, we used to allow the last stage of our PSLV rocket along with some fuel to drift away after launching the satellite, but now we make sure that the fuel is exhausted in order to prevent an explosion of the last stage, which would result in addition of more debris. The options, he says, include preventing the creation of new debris, designing satellites to withstand impact by small pieces, improving operational procedures such as using orbits with less debris, and so on.

Experts are also being supported to pursue studies on how to flush out the debris.Indian space scientists have joined other space-faring nations to work on space debris mitigation techniques.Bits and pieces of space trash measuring four inches or more are being tracked by the US and Russia since the days of the Cold War. Ditto with Russia and its string of radars scanning the skies for missiles.Isro has commissioned a Multi-Object Tracking Radar at Sriharikota, the country’s space port, to track the trajectory of 10 pieces of space junk and share the data with IADC.In 2009, a defunct Russian military satellite struck an operational American Iridium satellite over northern Siberia, blowing even more trash into space.
